Working in partnership – knowledge sharing, systemic analysis, and cross-sector collaboration in pursuit of maritime decarbonisation
Matt Dunlop, Group Director, Sustainability & Decarbonisation at V. and a secondee to the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (the Center), gives an update on V.’s strategic partnership with the Center and the key areas of focus for research.
In November 2021, V. strategically partnered with the Center, a not-for-profit, independent research and development organisation which aims to accelerate the transition towards a net-zero future for the maritime industry. The start of the partnership coincided with COP 26, the UN’s annual climate change summit, which took place in Glasgow where I am based with V.Group.
Since then, we have committed knowledge, expertise and data to support a number of science-based R&D decarbonisation projects including vessel energy efficiency initiatives and gains, improvements to the CII model to influence IMO amendments and dedicated maritime trade routes known as green corridors, Personally, as a secondee spending much time in the Copenhagen Center, my focus has been to project manage studies related to ammonia fuel safety with a focus on the human element, identifying challenges and providing practical solutions. It has been a slow burner, however like any R&D study, the output needs to be watertight and stand up to scrutiny, which it now does!
Over the past four years, MMMCZCS has grown from an ambitious idea to a globally recognised collaboration platform for maritime decarbonisation. The impact report captures key highlights from that journey – showcasing progress, partners, key activities, and the real-world impact we’re making across the maritime ecosystem.
From green corridors to specialist maritime supply chain registries and ammonia safety, the report features seven case stories that exemplify how the Center works, providing a snapshot of the impact we’ve achieved over the last two years across our work programs. It reflects our distinctive approach – bridging technical solutions with policy, business models, and standards to accelerate maritime decarbonization.
We can all make a difference to our planet.
