Team V. completes The Mission to Seafarers’ Adventure Race Japan 2025
Robert Desai, Team V.’s captain, reflects on the journey through Izu.
From 15-18 May, Team V. – consisting of Jesper Bo Hansen, Group Director, Global Commercial and Decarbonization; Mario Moretti, MD of V.Ships Singapore; and me – took part in the Adventure Race Japan (ARJ), an incredible endurance event set in the breathtaking Izu Peninsula. This unique challenge is organized by The Mission to Seafarers (MtS), a maritime charity that provides vital emotional and practical support to nearly two million seafarers around the world.
The Green Dragon Race – a challenging hike covering 9KM – gave us an opportunity to channel our collective energy, spirit, and commitment to both adventure and a cause that truly matters. Alongside 297 other participants from around the globe, we hiked through scenic, UNESCO-recognised landscapes, tackling two demanding days of terrain, teamwork, and problem-solving.
After arriving in Shuzenji on Thursday 15 May, the event kicked off with a safety briefing and welcome dinner. On Friday, day one of the race, we set off early for our first challenge — a winding hike through the natural beauty of Izu. After celebrating the day’s efforts back at the hotel with a half-way dinner, we spent the evening resting ahead of the Saturday leg of the race, which featured a shorter orienteering-style course that tested not only our endurance but also our brainpower.
Saturday night’s gala dinner and awards ceremony offered a chance to connect with fellow participants, reflect on the experience, and celebrate some wins — not only in athleticism but also in fundraising and problem-solving.
Speaking of fundraising, this adventure is about more than just physical endurance. Along with every team, we committed to raising at least $5,000 for MtS to support seafarers’ welfare globally. Every dollar raised goes toward mental health support, transportation services, and family assistance.
Whether we were sweating up a mountain trail or puzzling over an orienteering clue, Team V. was proud to do it together for a meaningful cause. Thank you to everyone who supported us from the start to the finish line.
