Marlins launches new English language elearning course for engineers to improve communication at sea

Marlins, V.Group’s world-leading brand of maritime English language testing, recruitment and elearning solutions for seafarers, has launched its first ever maritime language elearning course for marine engineer officers and crew.

The new course is designed to improve communication at sea by helping marine engineers to develop their English language skills in line with industry requirements. It also aims to reduce the number of accidents caused by miscommunication by building seafarers’ English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation across a range of key maritime topics including personal safety onboard and watch keeping.

“A breakdown in communication can have far-reaching consequences for the crew, cargo, vessel and the marine environment”, said Catherine Logie, Business Development Director, Marlins.

“Data shows that miscommunication is often the root cause of the majority of accidents at sea. English is the common working language of shipping internationally, however crews can have varying standards of competency when it comes to Maritime English.

“From our experience in testing seafarers’ Maritime English globally for 25 years, we are aware that engineers in particular can require some dedicated support to help them enhance their English language skills.”

The course combines a range of speaking, listening and reading tasks which aim to engage and motivate the learner throughout, including an in-built speech recording facility allowing learners to compare their own speech with that of a native speaker.

Logie added: “This highly creative and interactive programme builds on our extensive expertise as an establish global leader in Maritime English assessment and training. We have combined our knowledge of the language-learning needs of engineers with our seafarer-centred elearning approach.

“By taking this course, seafarers will improve the English skills they need or communicating within multi-national crews, during inspections and in ship / shore communications.”
