John Adams to moderate Crewing in Crisis event
On Thursday 15th October, V.Ships UK managing director John Adams will moderate a forum hosted by the Bahamas Shipowners Association (BSA) focusing on the impact of Covid-19 on seafarers.
In his capacity as chair of the BSA, John will chair a panel discussion of the issues continuing to adversely affect crew wellbeing, including ongoing difficulties in facilitating changes as a result of travel and port restrictions and the reluctance of governments to comply with IMO and ILO resolutions.
“This unprecedented crisis has tested the shipping industry as never before – we need to overcome immediate challenges and safeguard our future,” explains John, who in addition to his role with the BSA also serves as vice chair of the International Chamber of Shipping. “At V.Group, we have been very vocal about the need to implement change across the industry to ensure that our seafarers are treated as key workers with a focus on their wellbeing at all times. This forum will provide an opportunity to examine some of these issues in detail and discuss how we can work together as a community to achieve a better working environment for our crews.”
The BSA represents the shipowners of the sixth largest register in the world. Anders Brodje, manager of the BSA, is confident that the association can make a positive impact on the industry. “After joining, most of our members choose to remain active, pooling knowledge and experience and collectively providing a clear voice on industry matters,” says Anders. “Along with the panel speakers, I’m looking forward to enhancing our members’ expertise with this informative and lively discussion.”
Panellists include:
- Stephen Cotton, Secretary General of the ITF, representing the largest seafarers’ union.
- Guy Platten, Secretary General of the ICS, one of the leading shipowners’ organisation.
- Dwain Hutchinson, MD and CEO of the Bahamas Maritime Authority and representative to the IMO.
- Claes Berglund, Director of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Stena and President of ECSA.
